Final commentary before I write my sermons nearly done

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I have one more commentary to finish writing before I can dig into my sermons, and it’s nearly done! In fact, were I not blogging tonight – which I need to since it’s deadline week – I would have finished it by now.

One of the things I enjoy is the chance to teach the same topic again from a different emphasis. This final Torah portion I’m teaching before writing my sermons is like that.

I taught this portion last year and focused on the shadows of Messiah found in the life of Joseph. This year, I’m focusing on what we can learn from Joseph when it comes to resisting temptation; not just that he does it, but how he does it.

I’m still leaning toward my sermons focusing on the topic of Making It Real, but I’m remaining open in my prayer life for the L-RD to direct me to another topic if He wishes. We should know soon.

Two commentaries done, one more, plus sermons, remaining

Monday, November 16th, 2009

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have three commentaries and two sermons to write and deliver over the next few weeks. The progress report so far? I have two commentaries done or nearly done, one revving its engine, and then I’ll be free and clear to work on the sermons.

That’s a work load that makes me long for a retreat, at least in my daydreams. But even without that, it’s quite an honor to be entrusted with two sermons and three deliveries of said sermons by around the time of the first of the year.

I’m glad my prayer life is better now than it was a year ago, or I’d be more stressed out by this; as it is, the writing is going pretty smoothly, and feels like a natural outgrowth of the study and prayer involved. Praise the L-RD!

A rotation is coming

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I’ve enjoyed the past several months doing the Torah commentaries every week at my congregation, but the most recent good news is that there is a rotation coming! That’s right, soon I’ll be sharing the Torah commentary duties with a couple other folks.

Some people might be disappointed, but not me; I’m in a Torah study with both of the people joining the rotation and I couldn’t be happier to see them taking on this challenge. It is nice to not have to write a commentary quite so often.

So, let’s see… less work for me, and joining forces with two good friends to share the duties with? I don’t see any negatives!

Audio blogging is here!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Good news! I have audio blogging versions of my commentaries, dating all the way back to the very first one, available now on this blog! Just look for the linked text that says, “Or listen to it!” Click on that and the .mp3 file will download into your preferred player.

All audio is taken from a live taping of me delivering these messages at Beth Yeshua, though some of the early ones were taped at Kehilat Sar Shalom. One or two I recorded after the event because the live taping didn’t turn out.

I’ll continue to add audio as we go, now, though it’ll go up a few days after the text is posted, due to production reasons. Enjoy!

Audio blog versions are coming … honest!

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I know I’ve been promising it over almost a month now, but even if you threaten to surf over to a nice travel insurance site, I promise that audio blog versions of my Torah commentaries are indeed coming to this site soon!

Most of the files (except the most recent week) are done and in MP3 format. All I need to do is upload them via FTP and add in the links, so I’m about a third of the way home on this little project. Stick with me and it’ll get a lot easier soon. Once all the old ones are up, keeping the current commentaries up-to-date will be a lot easier.

Finally, a week ahead

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Well, I have to keep it up now, but I am finally a week ahead on my Torah commentaries, and it’s a great feeling to be relieved of all that deadline pressure. Sure, it’s not like I can let it go and fall back to being right up till deadline… that would defeat the purpose.

But it’s nice to know that T’ruma is already done and I can start prayer, study and writing on Tetsaveh before it’s even close. In my spare time, I won’t let this blog slip into trivia like sharing going green tips, or anything, but I also won’t be posting my commentaries early, either; I like to deliver them first, at Beth Yeshua, and then post them here.
